Peter Thomas Smith passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 9 after a brief illness.
He was born on Jan. 20, 1940, to the late Leonard Nicholas and Mary McGovern Smith.
Pete transferred from Cardinal Mindszenty to Dunkirk High School where he graduated in 1958. He resided in Sheridan, N.Y., his entire life, up until his passing.
Pete was a retired Union Mason. He was a chip off the old block following in his father’s footsteps. He was Town Justice of Sheridan for 44 yrs.
He loved to be outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. In the late ’60s he owned and operated a Skiroule snowmobile dealership. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and has taken many hunting and fishing trips where he has harvested numerous Black bears, Moose, Whitetail deer and Walleye. His favorite food was pizza, and we find it ironic that he passed on National Pizza Day. He was a kind soul and liked to help others in time of need.
He leaves behind a daughter, Donna Smith; three sons, Scott (Karen) Smith; Peter (Tania) Smith; Todd (Rosangela) Smith and one stepson, Ryan (Tiffanie) Smith. He has four grandchildren: Nicole (Tad) Hardy, Peter Zierlein, Peter (Precious) Smith and Buck Smith. Two great grandchildren Peter Jacob Smith and Amelia Rae Hardy.
He was a lifetime member of the Bricklayers Union Local 40-Jamestown (Local 3-Buffalo).He was also a member of the Hanover Rod & Gun Club, Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, and the Dunkirk Moose Club.
Following the guidelines and protocols administered by the governor of NY, relatives and friends may call Sunday from 3-6 PM at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty St in Dunkirk, where funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 a.m.There will be a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery, at a later date where he will be laid to rest in the family mausoleum.
In Lieu of Flowers the family asks donations to be made to the Arbor Day Foundation where you can plant a tree in his memory since he loved the outdoors or Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care.
