Margaret A. “Peggy” Pokoj (née Sekula), formerly of Front Street,
Dunkirk, and most recently of St. Columbans on the Lake Retirement
Home, left this world after 92 wonderful years of life on Sunday, July
2, 2023 in the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Cheektowaga, NY.
Peggy was born in Dunkirk on December 30, 1930 the daughter of the
late Stephen J. and Dorothy (Gautcher) Sekula.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Peggy was married to the late Anthony
J. Pokoj and was a devoted mother to three sons.
She was a New York Telephone operator, Coordinator of the American
Cancer Society Dunkirk office and employee of the Dunkirk Observer
circulation department. In 1972 Peggy co-founded/owned Tony's Waffles
with her husband which to this day serves patrons of local county fairs
and festivals. She was an active member of St. Hyacinth's Church, and
the parish’s Mothers Club and Our Lady of Fatima Society.
Surviving are her three sons- Stephen (Christine) Pokoj of Orchard Park,
NY, James (Robin) Pokoj of Tonawanda, NY, and Richard Pokoj of Dunkirk,
6 grandchildren- Alex (Allyson), Ed (Hilary), Nicholas, MD (Chelsea), Libby,
Monica, and Anna Pokoj and four great-grandchildren Clayton, Zeke, Oliver
and Leo Pokoj. She is also survived by her sister Patricia Ebert and several
nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by two brothers, Stephen
and David.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, October 21st at 10am in
the Chapel of St. Columbans on the Lake Retirement Home.
Private interment will be held in the columbarium at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
