Joseph A. Portman III, 84, “Jay” known by his family, of Dunkirk, died Saturday morning, August 31, 2019 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born November 4, 1934 in Bridgeville, PA, son of the late Joseph II and Jean (Burdis) Portman.
At the age of 16, his family moved to Sherman, New York to begin grape farming. Joe began working at Welchs in Westfield, NY, served in the US Navy aboard the USS Boston, then nearly a decade in the office at True Temper, retiring from Niagara Mohawk Power Company following almost 25 years. Joe idolized Elvis Presley and enjoyed his many friends at private clubs.
He was a proud lifetime member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish, Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, Monisuzko Club, Beaver Club, past member of the Moose Club, Dom Polski Club, VFW Post #62, Marine Corps, Frank Aquavia Club and First Ward Falcons Club.
Survivors include his wife of over 55 years, Carol (Drag) Portman, their daughter Maureen (Joe Pace) Portman, Justin Huss and Clarissa Portman, sisters Joan Grant and Judy Hartken.Preceded in death in addition to his parents is abrother, Jon.
Funeral services will be held this morning at 10 a.m. in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish Church of St. Hedwig. Interment will be in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery.
