Herbert J. Horey

Herbert J. Horey, 90, of Dunkirk, died Friday morning, January 8, 2016, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born May 5, 1925, in Dunkirk, son of the late Herbert and Carrie (Bull) Horey. An area resident all his life, Herb attended Fredonia High School. A WWII veteran, he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Osmus, from 1943-46 and received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal. Herb retired from Red Wing in Fredonia in 1990. He enjoyed to play cards, pinochle and Cribbage, time spent at Ellman's Garage and Matt's News, along with working in his garden. His memberships include St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R.C. Church, Life member at American Legion Post 59, WWII Vets and Kosciuszko Polish Home. Surviving are his sons Robert (Jean) Horey of Hilton, NY, Richard Horey of Boston, MA, three grandchildren Danielle (David Maines) Long of Dunkirk, Ashley (Ron) Rider of Webster, Robert Scott (Rebecca) Horey of Iowa, great-grandchildren Haylie Irene Maines, Jessica Lynn Maines, Tyler Vincent Rider, Addison Grace Rider, Finley Belle Horey, along with several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceded in death in addition to his parents are his wife, Irene (Bradley) Horey, who died July 1, 1994; great-grandson, Colton James Douglas Maines, who died December 9, 2013; brother, Robert James Horey; and sisters Edna Keoppen, Emeline Timothy, Ruth Schults and Clara Belle Moore. Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk, today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R.C. Church. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
