Daniel S. Somerfeldt “Doc” of Silver Creek, NY, died on February 3, 2022, peacefully surrounded by his family.
He was born May 8, 1926, in Dunkirk, NY, the son of Stanley and Rose (Kuczenski) Somerfeldt.
He graduated from Dunkirk Highschool and served in the US Navy during World War II, in Pacific Theater. Upon his return he worked at Hoffman’s Machine Shop, Chevrolet in Buffalo, then finished his career as a Supervisor at Great Lakes Color Printing.
Mr. Somerfeldt was an active member in the First Ward Falcons, Dunkirk Elks #922, National Rifle Association, Northern Chautauqua Beagle Club and volunteered at bingo at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He was also an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills.
At a young age he started raising beagles which led to his love for hunting and fishing. He traveled across the country and became an accomplished hunter for moose, elk and bear.
Mr. Somerfeldt is preceded by his loving wife of 59 years, Lorraine (Recek) Somerfeldt. He was a father of four children, Christine (Alexander) Tarantino of Rochester, NY, Kim (Thomas) Poweski of Fredonia, NY, Wayne Somerfeldt of Westerville, OH, and Susan Wantuch of Buffalo, NY.
Brother of the late Helen (Kirk) Michalak of Dunkirk, NY. He was also a caring grandfather to six grandchildren, Michael (Marie) Tarantino, Adam Tarantino, Kyle (Rachel) Somerfeldt, Julie Somerfeldt, Michelle (Christopher) Gilmour and Laura (Michael) Blakely.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-7 PM at R.Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 AM
in Holy Trinity R.C. Church in Dunkirk. Interment in St. Hedwig’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to send to donations to Lake Shore Humane
Society, 431 E Chestnut Street, Dunkirk NY 14048.
